Hivelight is a legal operations platform built specifically for law firms and barristers — think Atlassian, but designed for the unique pressures of running a legal practice. Co-founded in Sydney in 2022, Hivelight gives firms a single place to delegate work, track every matter in real time, train staff at scale through embedded workflow instructions, and deliver instant reporting to partners and COOs — all without touching a spreadsheet. The platform integrates with major practice management systems (Clio, Smokeball, Actionstep) and Microsoft Outlook, meaning it slots into how law firms already work rather than replacing their existing toolchain. Trusted by growing firms including Moores, Smith's Lawyers, Ballantyne Law Group, and Cardinal, Hivelight has reduced new-hire ramp time from 3–6 months down to 4–8 weeks through workflow-embedded training.

Challenges & Learnings
The core challenge was designing a product that complements — rather than competes with — a law firm's existing Practice Management System. Law firms are deeply entrenched in tools like Clio and Smokeball, so Hivelight had to deliver immediate value on top of those systems without demanding a wholesale workflow change. Building reliable two-way integrations with multiple PMS providers, each with their own API quirks, was technically demanding. On the product side, distilling the needs of partners, associates, and operations managers into a single coherent interface — where each persona sees exactly what they need — required extensive discovery work with real law firm teams.
